A Cupid (キューピッド, Kyūpiddo?) is an immortal being with the mission of helping humans fall in love.
Profile[edit]
Cupids are created by the Goddess of Love. When a human dies without ever experiencing love, she transforms them into a Cupid. Their mission is to help humans fall in love, which grants them good karma. If a Cupid accumulates enough karma, they will become human again, reincarnated in the current day as the age they were when they died.[1]
Cupids obtain missions from a central message board, where the file of each human target is posted by pigeons sent by the Goddess of Love.[2] These files contain information about the target, including their name, age, and past love interests.[3]
Cupids are based on the classical Roman depiction of Cupid, the god of desire, attraction, and affection, who carried a bow and golden-tipped arrows that filled those struck by it with uncontrollable desire. Although the Cupids of LOVE BULLET did use the traditional bow and arrow in the past, they now use modern firearms instead - everything from guns to grenades to rocket launchers.[4]
Since karma is used to purchase weapons and ammo, when selecting a mission Cupids must take into account the amount of karma they will gain versus the amount they will spend. In doing so, a Cupid could accumulate enough karma to return to their human life after about 500 missions.[5]
Characteristics[edit]
Inability to Fall in Love[edit]
Although it's a Cupid's job to help humans find love, they cannot fall in love themselves. If a Cupid is struck with a love firearm, they'll only be overcome intense envy.[6]
Altered Appearance[edit]
Every Cupid has white hair, red eyes, and white feathered wings, typical to depictions of angels or Cupid.
Immortality[edit]
As immortals, Cupids have a physiology distinct from humans. They cannot die of old age or sickness, and they do not require human things like baths.[7] They can, however, eat,[8] though it's unknown if it's needed to survive.
Abilities[edit]
Cupids have several unique abilities. These include:
Invoking Desire[edit]
Using specialized love firearms, including guns, grenades, and rocket launchers, Cupids can cause humans to fall in love with whoever they are looking at when struck. The weaponry is rendered ineffective if the human doesn't have at least a passing interest in their match.[3] In the past, Cupids used bows and arrows for their work, but the invention of firearms rendered them obsolete.[4]
A Cupid's bullet is required for a human to fall in love. Kanna describes love as a flame; the human's preferences, experiences, and personality are the tinder, and the Cupid's bullet is the spark that finally ignites it.[9]
Charm[edit]
Cupids have the ability to use Charm (
Human Disguise[edit]
When Cupids hide their wings, they can temporarily become visible to humans, with their abnormal appearance being ignored, and anyone they knew in life unable to recognize them.[11] After they return to their Cupid form, they're immediately forgotten by the humans who saw and interacted with them.[12]
Invulnerability[edit]
As they are not visible to humans, any human or human weapon cannot harm a Cupid. Cupid's own firearms, used for helping humans fall in love, also cannot harm them, and won't leave any physical injury.[13]
Speaking to Messenger Birds[edit]
Since doves and pigeons are messengers for the Goddess of Love, they can understand the speech of Cupids. The birds are able to reply using body language such as bowing their heads. This allows Cupids to communicate with them to a degree.[14]
Flight[edit]
By using the wings on their backs, Cupids are able to fly. However, like walking or running, flying is not an inherent ability and must be learned.[15]
